Emotion as a word is gotten from a Latin’s word “Emovere“, which means to be “stirred up” or “stimulated “. Emotions jerks an individual literally.

The quantities of emotions increases in feeling with the increasee in the feelings due to the closeness of emotions with feelings. And for that reason, the body get stimulated. The stimulation process here is what is called “Emotion”

What is Emotion!

▶Emotion is a complex psychological state that involves these 3 distinct components:

1. A subjective experience

2. A physiological responses

3. A behaviour or expressive responses.

Descriptions of Emotion:

Emotions are functional for adaptations to their environment. —- Nesse & Berridge 1997

Emotions are an acute disturbance of the individual as a whole, psychological in origin, involving behavior, conscious experience, and visceral functioning. – — P. T. Young

Each emotion is a feeling and each is at the same time a motor set. —— Woodworth

Theories of Emotions

James – Lange Theory: This theory was propounded by the above-named psychologists which suggested that emotion occurs as a result of physiological responses to an event.

▪ Robert Lazarus Theory: Lazarus proposed this theory, that there must be a clear thought before any physiological arousal. Give it a thought to any conscious experience.

Types of Emotions

Basic Emotions : This type of emotion was identified by psychologist Paul Eckman in 1970s and it’s generally experienced in every human culture. Examples: Trust, Happiness, Sadness, Fear, Urge, etc.

Combining Emotion : Psycologist Robert Plutchíck came up with a theory that one emotion can combine to form diffence feelings. Example: Basic emotions such as Joy and Trust can combine to form or creat Love.

Why do we experience Emotions?

◾ We got involved in emotions to rapidly reorganize our mentality and body resources to get prepared for what may always come in our directions.

◾ Emotions we experience each day can mold and prepare our actions and influence our decisions about our lives.

◾ Emotions sometimes let understandings flows between people.

Effects and Drives of Emotions

Being described as the complex set of interaction between subjective and objective variables that are controlled by neurons and hormones, therefore it gives rises to the following:

◾ Motivate behavior that is often but not always expressive, goal directive, and adaptive.

◾ Activated widespread psychological and physiological changes to the arousing condition.

◾ Effects on blood pressure, memory, and self-esteem.

Ways of Dealing with Emotions

Dealing with one’s emotions is a very crucial aspect. You can only get through this when you truly know and accept who you are. For one to deal with his or her emotion, you must consider your aims.

Note: Emotions are not choices, for that reason, you don’t choose to be in an emotion….you rather choose what to do at that juncture.
